Have you ever wondered why so few people are interested in insects?
Our sizeist society seldom sees insects - especially small ones - as worthy of notice. Yet every insect has its place on our planet, and a fascinating story to tell.
Games are widely acknowledged as educational tools and are extensively used to teach a huge range of subjects. However, few explore the rich world of entomology or the important work of biocontrol.
These cards display a beautifully illustrated range of arthropod pests and beneficials, designed as a game suitable for school children and adults.
It is a simple but powerful interactive experience that introduces players to the concept of biological control as well as the diversity and drama of insect life.
The game consists of 36 cards, each with a detailed illustration of an insect beneficial or pest, the common and Latin names of the species, and an interesting fact about it. Also included are five values required for playing the game: size (in millimeters), lifespan (in days), number of potential offspring, number of species (in the genus or family), and economic impact (a value between -10 and +10 as an estimated measure of economic damage or benefit created by the organism). A QR code on each card also enables players to look up each insect online.
The game is very simple to play. The active player selects one of the five characteristics from the card at the top of their pile and states the numerical value to the other players. The player with the highest value (or lowest value, if this was chosen by the active player) wins the round and adds their opponents’ cards to the bottom of their pile. The aim of the game is to win all the cards.
Battle of the Bugs is not commercially available at this time. Rather, it is seeking corporate or academic partners who share a vision for increasing interest in and awareness of arthropods and biological control.
If you and your organization are interested in ordering a quantity of card decks, we can discuss customization options, such as your own fonts, colors, and logos, custom QR code links, and even including specific insects and information in the game
